I installed an IRC server and a net news NNTP server on http://badcheese.com today with the hopes of going old-school with things. PHP forums and blog software is constantly getting exploited by PHP bugs and SQL injection problems and I just don’t have the time and effort to deal with keeping these things upgraded as much as I used to. IRC and NNTP have been given the test of time on the internet for 30+ years and have survived. Their tried and proven technologies and I’m going back to the old way of doing things. Twitter is cute, but overkill for a simple 140 character message. Blogs and Forums are great, but overkill for the purpose that they serve. Yea, I won’t be able to embed the latest and greatest CSS or Youtube video in my posts, but a URL works just as well. Time machine, “Back to the 80’s!!!”. :)
